Oconee County Parks & Recreation Director Lisa Davol presented Mincy Moffett, Botanist with the Wildlife Resource Division of Georgia DNR and Oconee County resident, with the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association State and District Volunteer of the Year Awards at the Oconee County Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, November 3, 2020.
Moffett was responsible for facilitating a collaborative discussion with the State Botanical Garden, Athens-Clarke County Sustainability Office, DNR Monarch Program, and Oconee County Senior Center for a prairie restoration and/or pollinator garden at Oconee Veterans Park. His guidance led to the first installation of a pollinator garden in the Oconee County Parks and Recreation park system.
Moffett designed the 10’x10’ pollinator garden for approximately 120 individual plants, comprising 18 different plant species, and he invested his sweat equity into excavating two full pickup truck loads of red clay from the site before tilling the ground and adding mulch. He secured donation of the topsoil and rounded up volunteers, including his family, to install the plants. He also donated plants from his personal garden and got Georgia DNR to donate the signpost and base. The installation alone required 60 hours of labor.
“Not only did Mincy spearhead the project, he has been the guardian and caretaker of the pollinator garden,” said Davol. “He continues to provide advice and guidance to ensure the pollinator garden is healthy and thriving. Connecting people to nature is a core value in Parks and Recreation. The impact of Mincy’s work in fostering an understanding of the role that native plants play in maintaining a healthy ecosystem will last for generations to come.”
The Pollinator Garden is located along the walking trail near the Oconee County Senior Center in Oconee Veterans Park.
