The Georgia EPD's seasonal ban on open burning is in effect from May 1 through September 30 for 54 counties in Georgia, including Oconee. This annual ban, which has been in effect since 2005, prohibits the burning of yard and land-clearing debris; it is in addition to the year-round ban on burning household garbage.
The Georgia EPD's seasonal open burning ban helps protect air quality during warm months when ground-level ozone can create health problems and helps reduce particle pollution during months with greater outdoor activity.
