Special Tax Districts

Special Tax Districts

Street Light Tax Districts:  Planning Department staff work together with citizens who wish to set up street light tax districts within their subdivisions. With input from the power companies, Planning staff review lighting plans, process the necessary paperwork, publish a notice in the newspaper, and forward all applicable information to the Board of Commissioners. Once the street light district has been approved by the Board and the lights installed, Planning staff notify applicable departments and post the annual "per lot rates" with the Clerk of Courts for reference in real estate closings.

Planning staff also assist citizens who wish to establish a special tax district for water system improvements or other infrastructure improvements within their community.

Planning Department staff work with the Oconee County Water Resources Department or other appropriate departments to establish the boundaries, level of service, and cost of such improvements. Staff process the necessary paperwork, publish a notice in the newspaper, and forward all applicable information to the Board of Commissioners. Once the special tax district has been approved by the Board, Planning staff assist the Oconee County Water Resources Department or other appropriate departments with coordinating design, scheduling, bidding and other functions necessary to install the infrastructure improvements. Upon completion of these improvements, Planning staff notify applicable departments and post the annual "per lot rate" with the Clerk of Courts for reference in real estate closings.
