Mission

To increase citizen awareness of the need for individual environmental stewardship and to offer opportunities for public involvement in local projects.


The Keep Oconee County Beautiful Commission meets on the first Monday of every month at 7:00 pm at the Oconee County Government Annex at 1291 Greensboro Highway.  The meetings are open to the public. 

KOCBC is always looking for environmentally concerned citizens to become Commission members, Auxiliary members and volunteers.

Responsibilities

To develop and execute environmental and educational outreach programs encouraging citizen stewardship.

To provide supportive educational materials for county programs such as Litter Abatement, Solid Waste Management, Recycling & Beautification.

To conduct Environmental & Recycling programs and projects.

PLEASE NOTE: All sites are closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All sites are fenced and lighted with attendants present.

3) How much does it cost to recycle?

Recyclying is FREE at the Oconee County Collection Sites.  You do NOT need a PAY AS YOU THROW bag to recycle!

4) Are there ways to recycle items the county’s collection sites do not take?

First, the good news is that recycling in Oconee County is FREE AND SO EASY and, now MORE ITEMS THAN EVER BEFORE can be recycled due to the transformation of Athens-Clarke County's Recycling facility.
Oconee County's contractor who hauls the materials for recycling from the Oconee County Collection Sites takes them to ACC's recently upgraded facility where they are now doing "single stream" recycling of many more products, including plastics beyond just 1s and 2s and most every type of fiber including milk cartons, catalogs, magazines and more. For everything else that cannot be recycled for free at an Oconee County collection site, please start by checking these websites:
www.earth911.com – All you need to do is type in the item and your zip code and earth 911 will tell you the nearest place to recycle that type of item.
www.freecycle.org – If you have lots of household items that you would like to get rid of, and you want to keep them out of the landfills, you can list them with a local "freecycle" group. Your "trash" can become someone else's treasure. Remember, it is great to reduce, reuse and recycle!
www.terracycle.net – TerraCycle wants to eliminate the idea of waste. They have created "national recycling systems for previously non-recyclable or hard-to-recycle waste. Anyone can sign up for these programs, called the Brigades, and start sending [them] waste" that is converted into "a wide variety of products and materials." Many of the brigades actually pay for the recyclables.

5) What are PAY AS YOU THROW bags?

The Oconee County Public Works Department through its Sanitation Division offers a very economical way for Oconee Citizens to haul their trash and recyclables at one time to any of the five Solid Waste & Recycling Collection sites throughout the county.  Just place all your non-recyclable items into a PAY AS YOU THROW bag (available locally at a nominal fee) and put them in the appropriate bin at the collection site of your choice.  The PAY AS YOU THROW bags are currently blue but the color will be changing to maroon later this year.

Members of the commission are Oconee County citizens like you who are appointed by the Oconee County Board of Commissioners to three year terms  -- people who are interested in keeping our beautiful county clean and in promoting environmentally sound practices to make it even better.
