Georgia
Civic Awareness Program for Students - Trip to Capitol |
|

On Wednesday,
February 11, 2009, Twenty-two high school students from Oconee
County traveled tot eh Capitol to learn first hand about state
government. The students were able to sit in the gallery
of the State Senate to watch and hear legislators discuss
pending bills. The Oconee GCAPS students were joined by
GCAPS members from Wilkinson County for lunch and participated
in a joint exercise to share details about themselves, their
counties and the GCAPS program. State Representative
Bubber Epps (District 140) met with the two groups and answered
their many questions. ACCG staff members escorted the
students on small personalized tours of the capitol building.
Georgia Civic
Awareness Program for Students (GCAPS) was initiated by the
Association County Commissioners of Georgia, in cooperation with
county governments, to provide an opportunity for junior and
senior high school students to become familiar with government
functions, especially at the local level. Oconee County
was chosen as the pilot county for the program in 2007.
Wilkinson County was added in 2008 and ACCG hopes that all 159
counties in Georgia will have the program in the near future so
that our young people will become knowledgeable about what
it takes to run a government and that they will become
participatory members of our representative democracy.
GCAPS also has corporate sponsorship from Georgia Power, Holland
& Knight, Coca-Cola and Starbucks.
In Oconee County,
Commissioner Margaret Hale serves as the Program Director for
GCAPS. She is pictured above with the students along with
Governor Sonny Perdue and State Senator Bill Cowsert (District
